Motivation
The committee of Architecture and Engineering was created to unite and organize applied science professionals and students to help improve the quality of life in disadvantaged communities. Scientific developments are intended to prolong and improve life; nonetheless, basic technological improvements usually reach disadvantaged communities last or never, these are the same people who suffer the most from higher levels of stress, poverty, and abuse due to low levels of education. This occurrence can be observed in communities where residents struggle daily to survive against the odds of deterioration and poverty. In some cases governmental intervention is inadequate. Therefore, this committee is determined to provide privileges conceived by scientific discovery to underserved communities. This committee advocates that human welfare is dependent on the degree of control people have on the environment, thus the ability to design, predict, and implement technology is invaluable.
Guiding principle:
The projects and activities carried forward by members of this committee are focused towards caring for the current generation while influencing future generation to replenish the ranks of community servants. Such efforts will result in an increased presence of these much needed technological improvements in the community. This obligation can begin to be accomplished in the following ways:
- Urging existing agencies to address and solve problems.
- Provide workshops and seminars to inform communities and key personnel about new methods and technologies.
- Raising funds for investing into community infrastructure.
- Researching and developing solutions.
- Mentoring future scientists.
In order to meet these goals, a diverse committee is required. All types of engineers, technicians, designers, and architects are welcomed, since the problems this committee will face are complex and multidisciplinary.
Past Projects
Fire Prevention Workshops
The Association of Professionals and Students provided a Fire prevention workshop to the Inland Empire community. It was intended to alert community members of potential fire hazards and introduce fire disaster readiness. This workshop was assembled by members of APS belonging to the committee of Architecture and Engineering. They prepared such themes as statistics of fire damage in the US and CA, origins and classifications of fires, fire extinguisher use, home fire detector installation and maintenance, evacuation planning, and protection from wild fires. This workshop took place in Redlands Ca, at 7:00 pm and ended at 8:30 pm, 15 community members attended. They reflected great pleasure and satisfaction towards the committee’s effort to provide home safety information.
Environmental awareness workshop
On March 22, 2008 the committee put together a workshop for the children of the city of Redlands. The workshop was programmed to teach children 5-12 years of age about the current environmental issues. Talks concerning global warming and its causes, the value and importance of recycling, and conservation concepts where presented. Additionally hand crafts where provided to the children, which include a picture mosaic made from old magazines and a wind chime constructed of disposable plates and silver ware. These crafts where designed to reinforce the concept of recycling. Approximately 12 children attended and hand lots of fun learning about their environment and playing the in the jumper that was provided to them.
