History

Since its inception in late 2004, the Legal Committee has provided practical and relevant information to its local community regarding their legal rights. From the late 2004 to the early 2006, the committee presented Citizenship Application Assistance as well as “Know your Immigrant Rights” workshops with demonstrated success. In the past year, the committee has presented “Employment Rights” workshops and hosted radio programs on politically relevant issues affecting the Latino community.

Past Projects

Know your Immigrant Rights

November 2005
Immigrant Rights are among the most controversial and avoided topics for politicians. However, for a great number of immigrants living in California, information regarding their rights as immigrants in the United States can prove to be invaluable. Cognizant of this, the committee developed presentations for over 200 participants in Long Beach, San Diego and Redlands, CA.

Citizenship Application Assistance

April 2006
Through hands on application assistance, the Legal committee helped over 100 participants apply for United States citizenship. Areas served: Redlands, and Santa Ana, California.

Employment Rights Project

Late 2006-2007
Employment Rights affect people on a day to day basis without any regard to their legal status. Under California law, immigrants retain limited but legally enforceable employment rights. Unfortunately, the people most affected are often unaware of their legal recourse and suffer injustices under their employers. Cognizant of this, the Legal Committee presented six workshops to over 400 participants. Areas served: East Los Angeles, Pasadena, North Hollywood, Long Beach, Redlands/San Bernardino, West Los Angeles.
